2014 budget includes raise for city employees | News
Athens city leaders said their 2014 budget is looking good. They held a work session Friday with department heads to sort out last-minute issues before voting next week.
Mayor Ronnie Marks said the one-percent sales tax increase that took effect in January helped them maintain a million-dollar surplus for 2013. The tax hike raised an additional $3.1 million.
“That helps all the ATRIP projects. Actually, we could not do it without that. We couldn’t do sidewalks, we couldn’t do a lot of other projects that a lot of cities are just not financially able to do,” said Marks.
The proposed 2014 budget includes a 3% cost of living raise for Athens city employees, the first raise in three years.
The city council is expected to vote on the budget Monday night.
