Athens gets grant for community garden

The city’s Earth Day Celebration became more exciting when local officials were able to announce that Athens is getting a $20,000 grant to improve the Famers Market, including adding a community garden.

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Executive Coordinator Lynne Hart announced at the celebration on Saturday, April 20, that the project received approval from the Lowe’s Keep America Beautiful grant program.

“We are the only organization in the State of Alabama to be awarded a Lowe's/KAB grant,” Hart said.

KALB partnered with the City of Athens and Spirit of Athens to apply for the grant. Limestone County Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee wrote a letter of support. The county owns the Farmers Market and recently painted the pavilion to help start beautification efforts.

Over several months, the spoke to residents, took blood samples and tested land. Now, the results are in, and the agencies are ready to discuss the situation with the public.

Residents from Lawrence, Morgan and Limestone Counties are invited to attend a public forum about the spill on April 2nd at the Moulton Rec Center (13550 Court St.) at 6:00 p.m.

For more information about the public availability session, community members can call 1-800-CDC-INFO (1-800-232-4636).
