Limestone County cemetery targeted by vandals again

For the second time in two weeks, a Limestone County cemetery was targeted by vandals.

Deputies tell WAFF 48 News that about 66 tombstones were destroyed or damaged sometime Wednesday night. The same graveyard was damaged on November 8th. Members of the Little Ezekiel Missionary Baptist Church say only about 10% of the headstones in the cemetery have escaped unharmed.

"About 95 percent of the tombstones were either turned over or broken," said Deacon James Lucas.  "Getting that phone call again this morning really crushed me," he said.

Lucas said there is no reason why anyone should disturb someone's final resting place.

"Not knowing why anyone would want to do this or what their reason or purpose is," he said.  "It's kind of mind boggling. I don't understand it."

Investigators aren't sure if the two vandalism incidents are connected.

Church members plan to start cleaning the church again Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

If you have any information on these crimes, call the Limestone County Sheriff's Department at (256) 232-0111. There is a reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
