Athens Police have arrested two men for violating Alabama's Sex Offender's Act. One of the men was living less than 1/3rd of a mile from an elementary school.
53 year old Donald Winchester was registered to a home on South Lucas Ferry Road. However, Athens Police discovered he no longer lived there during a follow up check recently. He was found renting a room at the Bomar Inn on Highway 31. The Inn is less than 1700 feet from Brookhill Elementary. Winchester is being held in the Limestone County Jail.
44 year old Darren Brown told police he was living under a bridge under I-65 at Highway 251. Officers checked the bridges for several days, but never found any sign of him. The Alabama Sex Offender's Act allows for offenders to register as homeless, but they must let law enforcement know where they can be found. Brown was eventually found, arrested and sent to the county jail.
