City leaders look at sales tax increase | Business
Athens City leaders plan to discuss a proposed sales tax increase.
The discussion will happen during Friday's city council work session.
If approved the 1% sales tax increase would put the total sales tax in Athens at 9%. This would be the first sales tax increase since 1975.
The current 8% sales tax is divided in the follow way: 2% goes to the city, with 1% of that going to the General Fund and 1% going to Athens City Schools; 2% goes to Limestone County, 4% goes to the State of Alabama.
City council members will discuss how the additional revenue would be spent.
