Fiddlers Convention new home to old-style music championships | Arts & Culture
The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention has been named the home to Alabama State Champions for certain contests held yearly on the Athens State University campus.
The state legislature resolved, with both houses concurring, to recognize the long history and tradition of the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention and that the convention be the official home of contest to thirteen different categories of old time music.
“With the upcoming Fiddlers Convention being our 47th, this distinction is appropriate given our longevity and popularity,” stated Athens State Vice President Rick Mould. "We are proud to now be the home to these championships."
The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is known as the "Granddaddy of Midsouth Fiddlers Conventions" for its role in reviving the tradition of competition in old time music. The convention brings some 200 contestants to compete for top prize money in 18 different categories.
This year’s convention is scheduled for October 4 and 5.
